What about those EventViewer messages?ĮventViewer is a mess. In the end you’re either left with a malware-laden machine (that won’t be “fixed”, by the way), bogus charges on your credit card, or both. Your payment information may be used not only for that quoted fee, but for other purchases you haven’t authorized. You’re quoted a high price for this “service”.The scammer “discovers” that in order to fix your (non existent) problem you’ll need to purchase something and at this point, they ask for your payment information. While accessing your machine several things may happen: They’re just web services that the scammer uses as a vehicle for accessing your machine. Important: Sites like  and other remote-access services are not involved in the scam. Typically that means they have you connect to a remote access site, such as  so you can give them access to your computer. The scammer asks you to allow them to access your computer. Or they have you open up the event viewer and point out the many, many errors listed there. To prove that there’s something wrong, they ask if your computer has been crashing recently. They claim that they’ve detected that your computer is causing many errors on the internet or that there are “problems with your account”. Microsoft, your ISP or any of the other companies these scammers claim to be from are not involved in any way. The scam is very simple: someone calls you claiming to be from Microsoft or your ISP or your anti-malware provider, or some other authoritative company. To start with, let’s not hook up that external hard drive just yet. Unfortunately, your family member having fallen for the scam puts you in a difficult and dangerous position. In recent years (yes, years) I’ve been getting lots of reports of this scam and its variants. Fortunately, many people are rightfully suspicious and cut it off before it goes too far. Neither do ISPs, security companies, or pretty much anyone else who might have some role of internet authority. Microsoft doesn’t call people because of errors on their computers. I have also filed a police report with my county police about this.īest buy is not getting back to me or reversing this charge since this was fraudulent purchase and they are not sharing any more information on who picked up, how did they pick up (what ID, order confirmation etc) and videos from the store on that day of pick up at 6:38pmīest buy tells my card company's investigation that its a valid charge and so card company is unable to refund the money. As you point out, it’s a scam. The customer service agent simply says someone will reach out and they dont. I keep calling that number and no way to talk to the fraud department. Best buy has not returned any of my calls since then. I asked for who picked up at the store, what car tag, videos of who picked up etc. When I login to my Best buy account, I don't see this transaction under my account. was not aware of this since Bestbuy did NOT send me an email with order information though they state the order was placed with my email. I was told an online order was placed on 4-DEC and the goods were picked up on at 6:38pm. On 2, I called main best buy number on 1-88 and filed a fraud report - Ref no. I asked how was 2k worth of goods given away without checking ID and why wasn't an email sent to me when the order was placed. I was told it was a curbside pickup at Lanham, MD store. I called Bestbuy and asked what was the purchase and where the goods were shipped to. A month later, i received letter from card company that the charge is valid and there was on online purchase on using all my information. I called my card company right away and they closed the account, refunded and started an investigation and sent me a new card. I saw 2119.98 charge on my chase credit card on 7-DEC which i did not recognize.
